About

The history of our brewery begins with an inn: Justus Hildebrand opened the "Zum Hirsch" restaurant in Hahn in 1831 with its own in-house brewery. It soon became known that the "Hirschen" served an excellent beer. But Justus Hildebrand quickly realized that he needed deep, cool cellars to produce his preferred bottom-fermented beer, which he could not build in Hahn because of the high groundwater level. In 1846 he therefore moved his brewery to Pfungstadt and increased the output there to around 200 hectoliters. The growth of the brewery made further investments and expansions necessary: Due to the great need for malt, a separate malt house was built on the site in 1868 and Justus Hildebrand bought one of the first ice machines available in Germany a few years later. It was driven by a powerful steam engine, which can still be admired today in the historic machine house of the brewery. The brewery soon became known nationwide for its beer - there were sales outlets all over Germany, even branches in Berlin, Hanover and Kassel. Internationally, the "Pfungstadt Pilsner-style beer" won numerous awards and was exported to many countries. In the years that followed, the brewery's beer output increased and the company continued to grow. There were now 99 employees, for whom a separate company health insurance fund was founded in 1884. Soon after, the company got its own railway connection in order to transport the beer away more quickly for export. In the region, the beer was delivered by horse and cart - at times up to 50 draft horses were kept in the brewery. Much has been newly developed in the course of the more than 180-year history of the Pfungstadt brewery - numerous delicious beer specialties and beer mix drinks that inspire the most diverse tastes of beer lovers. But one thing has always remained the same: the original recipe for the tart, fresh Pfungstadt beer, which is passed on from master brewer to master brewer with every generation. Completely in the tradition of Justus Hildebrand.
