About
While only officially in their 4th year of brewing in Chicago, IL, their brewing history goes back 135 years to 4th generation Pete Berghoff's Great Grandfather---Herman Joseph Berghoff. Alongside his brothers, in 1887, Herman founded the Herman Berghoff Brewing Company in Fort Wayne, IN. In 1893 Herman sold his traditional Dortmunder style Lager outside the World's Columbian Exposition gates in Chicago, IL. After much success, in 1898, he obtained a retail license and opened a saloon, The Berghoff Restaurant, at the corner of State and Adams, where you could purchase a corned beef sandwich and a pickle for a nickel and get a stein of beer! In 1912 he moved the saloon one door down, where the current restaurant stands, and has been operating ever since. Upon entering their 125th Anniversary and as a nod to their family's history in brewing beer, the brewery was built carefully within the center of the iconic restaurant after restoring their century-old bar, which they then aptly named and founded Adams Street in 2018. Now nestled in the heart of the historic 129-year-old restaurant, you will find Adams Street Brewery serving German Lagers and other rotating styles like Sours, Ales, Stouts, and more.
